Corporate Info | Consumer is Boss | Product Technology

For 160 years, we have been leading-edge consumer-product pioneers in developing new technologies and innovations that improve the health and well-being of our worldwide consumers. For example:

  • Crisco®: the first all-vegetable shortening
  • Tide®: the first heavy-duty synthetic laundry detergent
  • Crest®: the first fluoride toothpaste proven to prevent cavities
  • Bounce®: the first dryer-added fabric softener
  • Pampers®: virtually invented the disposable diaper category
  • Pert Plus®: the first shampoo and conditioner in one

Today, we have more new products and new technologies in the pipeline than at any other time in our history. Breakthrough ideas such as:

  • Dryel®: our home dry-cleaning product
  • Swiffer®: a disposable cleaning cloth
  • Febreze®: our fabric refresher

As a result, we were recently rewarded for our innovation with the National Medal of Technology. This is the highest honor given in the United States for innovative achievement in technology, an award given previously to companies such as Apple Computer, Merck and Microsoft.

Did You Know P&G’s history of innovative products is all linked to our first one — a candle. By using and evolving that candle’s product formulation and technology, we developed today’s global company. Click here for a graphic showing the technology link from our first products to P&G’s most advanced pharmaceutical breakthroughs. Roll over the blue areas for more detailed information. Consider This

We back up our commitment to technical innovation by investing nearly $2 billion a year in research and development. This ranks us as one of the top 20 largest R&D investors among U.S.-based companies. We also:

  • Have more Ph.D.s working in labs around the world than the combined science and engineering faculty at Harvard, MIT and Berkeley

  • Hold more than 27,000 patents worldwide and apply for an additional 3,000 per year
