Product Supply

We pioneered the Product Supply organizational design, which merged Manufacturing, Engineering, Purchases and Customer Services into an integrated whole — a total system.

The principle purpose is to move materials from supplier to customer while adding some value along the way through processing and packaging in the plant. This viewpoint forces us to move outside plant walls, and focus sharply on the handling, storage and transportation of materials from one end of the value chain to the other. Here are some of the choices this Product Supply focus calls out:

Did You Know As we try to lower costs, the possibilities with this Product Supply approach are about six times greater. This gives us the whole pie to work with instead of a small slice. This makes a big difference to our profit margins, retail pricing and our $2 billion-a-year investment in breakthrough product technology.

Consider This
Every decision we make has an impact on costs, on our employees and on consumers. So for Product Supply, simplification and standardization is a top priority. Creating and leveraging scale is mandatory.

The problem — Consumers in one country may prefer a slightly different fragrance versus the "base" formula. This customization would often have minimal impact on sales, but would lead to a substantial increase in costs. It could even slow down the go-to-market pace.

The answer — Simplify and standardize.
